volunteer and learning opportunities
1. Volunteer with a group of doctors, dentists, nurses and medical personnel throughout southern Belize and at local medical and dental clinics.
2. Be involved in educational presentations in diet and hygiene to various primary schools
3. Go on a Medicinal Trail learning about various local plants and their medicinal properties.
4. Assist in starting the region's first e-chart system by logging in information for the patients you encounter in the mission clinics.
Research topics
1.Epidemiology–high incidence of diabetes in Belize as a developing country (or specific areas of Belize), studies of genetic contribution (Type 1/ Type 2 DM); diet & effect of dietary changes, effects of natural remedies such as cinnamon / turmeric / ginger; diabetes associated conditions
2.Belize Mycology–Belize has one of the world’s largest mushroom varieties. Study of specific fungi and potential medicinal properties
3.Belize Seaweed–specific nutritional content (iodine, collagen), medicinal properties

WHat to bring along
- Light-weight cotton clothes or quick-drying cotton/synthetic blends.
- Comfortable walking shoes. Consider light boots for hiking and sandals for the beach.
- Swimsuits and T-shirts.
- Raincoat (June is the beginning of the rainy season in Belize; sudden and torrential rain is common)
- Cap or hat - be sure it's one that won't blow off in windy conditions on the water.
- Sunglasses - the darker the better.
- Health kit consisting of any prescription medicines you may need and a copy of your eyeglass prescription, plus aspirin, insect spray with 30% DEET, sunscreen (more than you think you'll need), Pepto-Bismol or other tummy medicine, bandages, sun-burn lotion, toilet tissue, moist wipes, seasick pills and other over-the-counter medicines.
- Your favorite snacks - (many American brands are available in Belize, but they are expensive.)
